Winter Garden Fun

Bird Watching
As you clean up your garden for winter, don’t forget to leave coneflowers and other seed heads until the birds have cleaned out all of the seeds. I clean feeders out and set up a few additional ones during late Autumn, as well. If you have fragile bird baths, it is time to put them away for the winter. I leave my copper bird bath out and install the bird bath heater so they have a source of water when temperatures dip below freezing.

Winter Wonderland Surprises
Think about where your garden just looked blah last year and tuck in a few last minute evergreen shrubs and decorative trees for winter interest.

Mark Garden Borders
I like to put a tall stake with an orange flag on it at the very edge of one garden border that is right beside a sidewalk. This keeps my helpful shoveling out crew from accidentally scooping out plants along with the snow, since I tell them not to shovel inside of the stakes.

Recipe From the Joyful Gardener’s Kitchen - Raspberry Almond Salad
Tuesday November 06th 2007, 3:52 pm

I picked my last few raspberries yesterday. I have some frozen, of course, but this was my last chance to enjoy a summer favorite of mine - raspberry almond salad.
Ingredients:
A handful of raspberries
A handful of almonds and/or hazelnuts
Spring salad mix
Raspberry Wishbone salad spritzer (I used to use a light vinegarette dressing, but this is already made and just as delicious.)

To make it:
Toss the raspberries, nuts and salad together. Spritz the dressing on the salad and start eating. It really is a delicious combination.
