Ask the Gardener – Two Vines on One Arbor
Conrad asks:
Can you grow grapes and wisteria vines together on an arbor.
Well, you can grow them on the same arbor, but I don’t recommend it. For one thing, they are both very heavy vines when they mature and would probably put an awful lot of stress on the structure. It may not be able to handle it.
Also, they have slightly different growing requirements. Your Wisteria prefers soil that has a PH of 6 to 7, while the grape vine is happier with 5.5 to 6.5. There is a bit of an overlap there, but having a PH of 7 will make your grape vine a bit cross and being lower than 6 will not endear you to your Wisteria vine. Grapes like Nitrogen, but Wisteria vines do better with a less is more approach if you want them to bloom.
