Gardening in Las Vegas

With more and more people moving to the semi arid western region, water usage is increasing dramatically. As much as most gardeners love those beautiful, lush English style gardens, Las Vegas homes would do better with landscaping that uses native plants instead of roses. Luckily, xeriscaping, or landscaping with plants that do well in the hot dry climate of this western region, is growing in popularity.

Things you should consider as you plan your garden:

* Even drought hardy plants need a bit of water to get established.

* Native plants can be more resistant to local pests and diseases.

* A quick check with your local extension office can help you avoid potentially invasive plants.

* Developing a system to recycle grey water (water from showers or your washer) for your garden can help you keep marginal drought hardy plants going during long dry periods.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use plenty of hardscaping in your semi-arid garden. Serene Zen like gardens with plenty of pebbles raked into patterns, benches, garden sculptures and arches are all completely happy without rain. Of course, since you are near the bright lights and quirky architecture of the busy city of Las Vegas, a Zen garden may not fit in with your garden plan. You may decide that colorful patio lights and replicas of New York city elements fit right in with your Yucca and cactus plants!
