Peter,
It may seem silly, but I do the same thing with the guilt over something I'll use a thousand times. Then, I spend $50 on a new dress without batting an eyelash and I only plan to wear it to one event.

I had a similar problem. I couldn't find my hand pruner, when I finally did, I apparently had left it outside all winter to rust. I had no choice but to buy a new one. The local garden center had a wide array of Fiskars tools. I spent plenty of time at the store trying them out, and found one that had an amazing grip and a rotating handle when you cut. I got it home and was amazed at how easy it was to cut compared to my other one last year. Later that day my wife noticed on the packaging that it was designed for arthritis sufferers - i felt guilty at first for spending the money, but a days worth of pruning with no problems was well worth it.
